What is Refinement?

Refinement is a Refined Rock band from Guildford, which strives for uniqueness and energy. The songs we write are based on getting a massive sound and having fun. We are a mix of High Energy Alternative-Rock, Heavy Rock, and Grunge Rock. We take the most inspiration from the bands; Bring Me The Horrizon, Linkin Park, Twenty One Pilots, Limp Bizkit, Pierce The Vail and The Foo Fighters. Our songs mostly focus on Specific feelings and, Relationships and life in general. Refinement is the definition of controlled chaos. Our lyrics are meaningful and have connections through our lore or between songs and will have hidden meaning and messages relating to the real world, religion or the lore.

Our Members-

Duarte Braga

Singer/Bassist

Duarte (Dewey) our singer joined our band in April of 2025. He came in new to music yet had a unique voice and a talent for playing guitar. He has improved in unspeakable measures and has since picked up bass to further improve the bands sound and his musical skills. Dewey being part Portuguese and Brazilian has musical influences from his whole family. His favourite band is Pearl Jam and loves old school rock.

Sam Hill-Price

Guitarist/Backing Singer

Sam our guitarist is one of the founding members of Refinement. He has an extensive knowledge of music through his trumbone playing and piano skills, and his extremely musical family. He is talented at music theory and writing his own music. He started playing guitar when he was 12 years old and has become very talented. Sam is half welsh but has lived in england his whole life. He plays the most instruments in the band at 7. His favourite band is I Prevail and loves making beats and mixing songs. His music taste is a lot heavier than both Drew’s and Dewey’s.

Drew Reeves

Drummer/Keyboard Player

Drew our Drummer is a founding member of Refinement. He is the most technology based member of the band focusing on production techniques and mixing and mastering. He has been playing drums since he was 9 years old and been playing piano since he was 15. Drew has lived in England his whole life but has been influenced by music from his family. His favourite band is Twenty One Pilots, as he likes high energy, metaphoric and creative music yet loves heavier songs too.

“Pushing the limits of creativity and defining modern rock with massive sounds and energetic yet meaningful music”

Before “Refinement”:

The Original band was founded in November 2021 under the name “Reinforcement 31”. It was a project where members Drew, Sam and old pianist, Harry, had tried out making songs which were a mix of pop and indie rock. A few inspired the songs in the upcoming album. Harry then left and it was left to just Sam and Drew, who continued. They later scrapped the name and developed a more heavy sound inspired by Green Day. The now lead singer, Duarte, tried out for the band in 2022, however, didn’t pursue it further so it stayed just Drew and Sam. Things slowed down until the summer of 2023 where things picked up again and they were back to write more songs and created a new album, which took ideas from the old songs. This, never took off and it again slowed until the summer of 2024 where both founders were motivated to make it work this time. As they moved into collage, the duo sat down and solidified there plans and that’s when Refinement was made.

2024:

Refinement was founded on the 20th of September 2024. It was a project that both Sam and Drew were keen to start. They started writing songs and came up with lots of ideas that they started recording and perfecting. Slowly through the end of 2024 songs were written and ideas were scrapped. I’ll be here (demo) was released as our first song. It was not the sound that define Refinement, yet it was something to show. Focus shifted to live songs again and the song ideas we had been working on.

2025:

Run Away was the next song to be recorded and released as our first proper song with vocals, drums and guitar. It was a big step forwards as it taught us recording techniques and initial mixing. However, Run Away presented us with one of our biggest improvements we needed to make, and that was a singer. Sam is a great singer yet it didn’t suit the style we were going for in the future, we needed a stronger voice. That’s where our best friend and the vocalist who tried out for us nearly 3 years ago came back. Duarte joined officially on April 28th 2024, while we were finishing writing Backpack. He was the big push we needed and his voice fit perfectly. We had our first gig at the start of July where we played some of our demo songs and some covers, most recognisably the premier of Backpack and our cover of Holiday by Green Day. It gave us lots of experience playing in front of a crowd and what we needed to improve. Backpack was released and it was a massive step forwards towards perfecting our sound, yet again it presented us with out next biggest improvement we needed: our lack of bass. Dewey then decided to learn bass and fill that hole and again save our sound. We then spent the summer writing songs and getting our first album cycle planned out. We had two more gigs in September, and October improving our playing a lot, yet the focus remained on getting our songs out, which is what the end of 2025 was for. Getting our album ready for release and recording all our songs that we have been waiting to record for so long.

Our 3 Promises

Fans Come First

Our Fans will always come first and we will never do anything to make it harder for you to listen to us, connect with us or create boarders for interaction. Also, we will never get too big for our boots and hide behind the screen and we will face your criticism and suggestions front on.

Always Improving

We will always look to improve what we have made or what we are doing. We will never be truly satissfied with what we release. That doesn’t stop with our music as we will do that from everything to our gigs/shows, our merch, our website, our posts, and our lore.

Our Music stays true

We will never change what we do musically, or brand wise for money. We will always be the same refinement and while our music or brand may adapt or mature, it will never change in just for money or other selfish gains.
